The Quran is the Speech of Allaah in the Arabic language. The word Quran means ‘The Book’. As such, it is a Book of Divine Guidance. The Quran was revealed to the last Messenger of Allaah, Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, via the Archangel Jibraeel (Gabriel), peace be upon him, more than fourteen centuries ago. It has laws and commands that govern how Muslims – those who submit to Allaah’s will – should live, individually, as well as collectively.

Millions of Muslims around the world read Quran every day, while hundreds of thousands of Muslims memorize Quran in its entirety. Those who have memorized the Quran are known as ‘Hafiz’. To recite Quran is an act of worship which draws the reciter closer to Allaah and earns him a many rewards in this world, as well as in the Hereafter.
The Quran states in Surah Al-Ankaboot (The Spider); Ayah: 45, “Recite that which has been revealed to you of The Book and keep up prayer; surely prayer keeps (one) away from indecency and evil, and certainly the remembrance of Allah is the best act, and Allah is aware of what you do“.
It is obligatory upon Muslims to read Quran, and if they do not know how to read the Arabic language, to lean Quran, by themselves, or through someone who can teach them. Many people are uncertain on how to read Quran because they do not know the Arabic language. Indeed, it is because of such doubts and uncertainties that many Muslims ignore their obligation to read Quran, while those who do know how to read the Quran neglect to improve their recitation skills, or in other words, their ‘tajweed‘.
Just as it is obligatory upon Muslims to recite Quran, in the same way it is also obligatory upon them to read Quran with the correct pronunciation. The Quran exhorts Muslims thus in Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow); Ayah:121:  “Those to whom We have given the Book recite it as it ought to be recited. These believe in it; and whoever disbelieves in it, these it is that are the losers.”
Most of the early Muslims memorized the verses of the Quran by heart, via the method called ‘Ilqaa’ in Arabic. Ilqa means “to put into”, in Arabic. This has been, and remains, the most effective method of learning and memorizing Quran. In this method, a teacher speaks the words of the Qur’an properly, then pauses as the students repeats those words exactly the way as the teacher has pronounced them. The teacher then corrects any mistakes in pronunciation. The exercise is repeated until the student has fully grasped the pronunciation of the words or Ayahs of the Quran which he, or she, is learning.
With latest advances in internet technology and VoIP software, people can now learn to read Quran from the comfort of their homes by logging into a Quran teaching portal using popular software, such as Skype.
